colleges and universities in Zambia dedicated to promoting a biblical worldview,
academic program excellence and advocacy benefitting Christian higher
education in Zambia.

Advancing Christian Higher Education in Zambia

CCUA affirm that man is justified only by faith granted by God’s grace in the
finished work of Jesus Christ (Eph 2:8-9). We gladly affirm the authority and
Sufficiency of the scripture in the life of every Christian and believe it is
foundational to all academic disciplines of higher education (2Tim 3:16).
Therefore, we are committed to teaching and practicing all disciplines from a
biblical worldview.

The mission of CCUA is to advance a biblical worldview in higher education in
Zambia and to unify member institutions that seek an environment for Christ-transformed lives by offering excellence in education.

Our purpose is to provide relevant information and advocacy for Christian
colleges and universities in Zambia.

Our Objectives

CCUA exists to provide:

Academic Excellence
Through an array of initiatives, we promote the development of high-quality academic research projects, provide opportunities for faculty to conduct innovative research with peers from other campuses, and provide administrators with opportunities to gain the most current information in order to lead highly successful campuses that employ best practices for student thriving and academic success.

Public Advocacy – As an effective and respected advocate for Christ-centered higher education in Zambia, we provide a unified voice to highlight the contributions of our institutions to the common good, to the honor of our God. This advocacy includes:

  • Advise member institutions on matters of policies and standards:
    • To assist member institutions in developing educational policies relevant for Zambian authorities.
    • To continually assess and understand the laws pertaining to higher education in Zambia for advocacy purposes in formulating academic and educational policies consistent with Christian education.
    • To encourage and affirm the highest academic standards for quality assurance of member institutions.
    • Provide a networking database of member institutions.
    • To facilitate optimal networking and the sharing of human resources and logistical input between member institutions.

Professional Development – To host numerous conferences for administrators to develop their skills, build connections with peer leaders, and equip them in their work to provide a holistic Christ-centered educational experience for their students. We also invest in faculty development and scholarship through institutes and grants intended to help faculty excel in their scholarship and integrate faith into their discipline. Other areas of professional development include:

  • To offer advice and networking opportunities that will ensure high academic standards in member universities.
  • To provide opportunities for instruction in best education practices from a biblical perspective.
  • To offer continuing education and orientation in academic matters affecting quality Christian education in Zambia.

Experiential Education – Provide faith-integrated study programs that expand students’ academic educational experience, provide unique internship opportunities, and develop and deepen their spiritual lives.

Dr. Lazarus Phiri

Co-Founder and Chancellor of Northrise University

Dr. Zimba, co-founder and Vice Chancellor of Northrise Unvieirsty was born and raised in Zambia. He pursued further education in Accountancy and later pursued studies in Theology. He aquired a Doctorate in Ministry  from Fuller Theological Seminary in the USA.

  • Dr. Zimba has worked for the following: Catholic Diocese of Ndola Youth Deoartment;
  • Coopers and Lybrand (Zambia),
  • Indeni Oil Refinery (Zambia),
  • Focus on the Family (Melborne, Australia);
  • Box Hill Church of Christ (Melborne, Australia),
  • Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena – California;
  • St. Peters by the Sea Presibeterian Church, Palos Verdes – California;
  • Grace Fellowship Church, Costa Mesa, California

In 2004, he co-founded Northrise University and served as president/vice chancellor. Today he is serving as chancellor of the university. 

Dr. Zimba is a warm and distinguished Christian leader who is passionate about his faith in Christ, the pursiuit of excellence and spreading of the gospel to touch and serve lives.

He currently serves on the the following boards:  

  • Northrise University Initiative, Costa Mesa, California
  • Northrise Board of Trustees,
  • Northrise Board of Regents (University Council), Ndola, Zambia
  • Mapalo Morning Glow Academy, Ndola, Zambia
  • Arising Life Ministries, Ndola Zambia
  • Hannel Boys Boarding, Luanshya, Zambia
  • Living Hope International Ministry

Dr. Zimba is a strong voice for authentic leadership and servanthood, a mentor to pastors, organisational leaders and young men.

Dr. Zimba enjoys bible studies, reading and spending time with his wife. He is an ardent supporter of Liverpool F C. His daily confession is Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me, the life that I live now in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

Lazarus was born and raised in Zambia. He has had the opportunity to train in Accounts and Business Studies, Pastoral Ministry (BSc), Intercultural Studies (MA), and Theology and History of Mission (PhD). Lazarus is the founding chairman for CCUA, an HEA expert for accreditation. Lazarus is married to Rachel Melhorn Phiri, and they have two sons. Jeremiah (married to Taryn) and Immanuel.

Dr. Phil Hunt

Philip Hunt has served as a church planter and missionary in Zambia, Africa since 1992, helping found Faith Baptist Church of Riverside in Kitwe. He now serves as Pastor for Preaching and Vision at Kitwe Church and as Vice Chancellor of Central Africa Baptist University, training the next generation of African leaders to plant healthy, reproducing churches across the continent. Phil also serves on the founding board of Faith Children’s Village Orphanage. He and Lori are the parents of seven children.

Rev. Samuel Yawila

Samuel Yawila is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Church in Zambia, a theological educator, researcher, and ministry leader currently serving as Acting Vice Chancellor of Evangelical University and National Director of WILD-Zambia. He is passionate about Christian education, moral formation, leadership development, and participatory learning within theological contexts. Samuel is also engaged in doctoral research focusing on collaborative initiatives between theological institutions and local churches in shaping the moral and spiritual formation of students in Zambia. Through his academic, administrative, and ministry leadership roles, he is committed to advancing transformative discipleship, contextual theology, and holistic Christian leadership in Africa.
